thermal camera hot vs. cold?

i know red means hot but what colors mean normal and cool and cold and warm and so on. thanks!

Actually the camera itself doesn't see visible colors. It sees "heat" given off as energy in the infrared spectrum. Depending on the camera the image can be colorized to show almost any color you want to be hot or cold.

When we use FLIR (Forward Looking Infra-Red) imaging systems for rescue, law enforcement or military applicatons, we typically set them up to be either white hot or black hot. This means the hotest objects will be white against a background of cooler objects shown in black or vice versa.

In other applications, like evaluating heating and cooling systems, imagers may be set to show show blue as cold and red as hot. I have also seen I've seen more than one infrared imaging system that used a Kelvin color temperature scale in which the coldest objects were actually red and the hotest were blue to white. Along the way and object may be green, yellow, orange, magenta or even white. The point lurking here is it varies depending on the imaging system and software used with the camera.
