What's the difference between Lithium-ion and Lithium-polymer batteries?
Whenever I look at electronics, I see two types of batteries: Li-ion and Lithium-polymer. What's the difference between the two? Which one stores more power? Which one lasts longer? Which one is safer for the environment?
Effectively they're the same thing.
The lithium-polymer (LIPO) is a more technologically advanced version of a Lithium Ion (Li-ion) battery. It's electrolyte is held in a solid polymer film which is directly bonded to the lithium electrode.
As a result they can be made in any shape and require no additional casing. For a given battery mass, a LIPO therefore holds more charge. Lifespan is slightly less than a lithium Ion Battery but this is due to them being such a new technology and the difference is decreasing over time.
It's arguable that a LIPO is safer when disposed of as the electrolyte is solid and less likely to leak out into the environment, but making the polymer is less green than using a liquid electrolyte. It's a moot point as most Lithium Batteries are recycled anyway.
Ultimately, it doesn't matter. The huge demand for LIPOS means that Li-ion is dying out: it makes no sense for a manufacturer to offer both types when a LIPO can be made in the same shape and size as a Li-ion and offers a greater charge capacity. Most of the Li-ions on sale today will only continue to be offered until the current manufacturing facilities reach the end of their lifespans at which point they'll likely switch to LIPO.
