Lens Hood

How important is it to use a lens hood?
I just got my first Slr Camera. I'm using a 28-200mm lens. How important is it to use a lens hood? When do I need it, and when can I go without?
Thanks
Some lenses have more of a problem with lens flare than others, which is the intended purpose of using a hood. Some folks use them specifically to protect the glass of the lens, I just learned how NOT to shoot into the sun and don't use them at all. I keep UV haze/multicoat filters affixed to all of my lenses 100% of the time and rarely use a hood. Typically, if you're shooting in the late afternoon, when the sun is at an angle to you and just happens to be giving you some flare issues, that would be a good time to use the hood. What most people don't realize is that you can see flare in the viewfinder before the shot is taken. The best thing to do is recompose your shot to be facing away from the sun at that angle (it's likely still unflattering to your subject even with the hood), or simply look for some shade to shoot in. So if you're afraid to damage the glass of your lens, or shoot in excessively bright or sunlit conditions where flare would creep into your frame, then by all means use it. Otherwise it's more convenient to leave it in the box your lens came in. Another tip, buy UV filters for your lenses and keep them on forever and your glass will be protected. Don't drop your lens. And don't shoot into the sun and you'll be fine.
