How to charge the Wii Remote?

I saw a charger for it at the video game store, but I thought it'd already be chargeable by hooking it up to the Wii, but there's no cord to connect it so I can't. There's apparently the option to use regular batteries. So if I bought that charger, would I still have to use regular batteries?
