Homemade Steadicam for Sony HVR-HD1000U?
I want to make a Steadicam for my camera (Sony HVR-HD1000U) its 6 pounds and about 8 1/2 inches tall and 18 inches long. I have very little money to spend on this, no more then 40 bucks, but i have a lot a PVC pipe, so if it entails that, it wont cost me anymore money. Does anyone no of a tutorial that will make a good solid Steadicam?
Using your favorite browser and search engine, search using "diy steadicam". You will get a number of hits.
The key is lowering the center of gravity with some add-on weight... Your problem is going to be with that particular camcorder - it is a shoulder mount (so it is way larger than a hand-held camcorder) and a bit on the heavy side (so more weight at the bottom of the "pendulum" is required to lower that center of gravity), so the counterweight will add even more heft to it. Ultimately, your entire rig will be pretty heavy.
To see if you *really* want to do this... try this, first... use your existing tripod. Have the legs in their "closed" position - non-extended and folded in against the center pole. Add about 1/2 pound of weight to the lowest point of the legs nearest the tripod feet. Extend the center pole where the tripod mounts to the camcorder as far as it will safely extend. Mount the camcorder to the tripod. When you use the rig, you will hold the center pole as close to the top of the tripod mount near the camcorder as you comfortably can. One handed.
Six pounds for the camcorder; 2-3 pounds for the tripod; 1/2 to 1 pound for the counterweight... That will get heavy pretty quickly. That's why the big dogs use a vest and spring-loaded counter-balance system.
Good luck...
